“For the price of a bus pass, the photographer went to the places where these women prostitute themselves. Several naked women as if they were with a client. (…) If the immersion is radical, the closeness with these women is not an obstacle to their dignity.” — Maitè Léal In 2018, Rodrigo Ruterte, the President of Phillipines, suggested that in a near future he could offer 42 virgins to every tourist in his country. In that same year, Guy Monnet, a french photographer, spent two months in a brothel in Colon Street (Cebu) photographing the hidden reality of prostitution in Phillipines.

  • This book, edited on the occasion of Monnet’s exhibition at Espacio Jhannia Castro in Porto, PT, is the result of that same work. These pictures are harsh but beautiful at the same time. They might even cause a certain discomfort to some but also a desire to know more about these women, their universe and reality. The idea of closeness is a constant throughout this work. It’s precisely on the idea of closeness that the book’s visual concept resides. The format, the papers involved and even the typography were chosen like if this was a novel. A novel you can take with you anywhere, always to remember and honour the fragility of these women.
